The Gardens was opened on Monday 11 June 1832 and has offered a peaceful and inspiring haven in the heart of Birmingham ever since. It’s survived nearly 200 years of change and growth and yet, has stayed very much to the original plans of J.C Louden, who designs the gardens back in 1829.

A Living Legacy: From Holly Bank Farm to Birmingham Botanical Gardens Treasure
Did you know one of our most iconic trees is older than the Gardens themselves? Standing proudly near the main lawn is our magnificent Copper Beech Tree, a living witness to history. We know that this green giant predates the Gardens as it can be found on old maps before the gardens were established, back when the land was still known as Holly Bank Farm.

Right now, its leaves are a deep, regal purple, but by autumn, they’ll transform into their namesake copper hue, a seasonal showstopper worth seeing in every phase.
