In response to the global challenge of biodiversity loss, we are fully committed to plant conservation. We adhere to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). Our plant records and living collections are curated to the highest standards, supporting international conservation efforts. We play a crucial role in safeguarding endangered plant species and promoting sustainable practices.

Our Woodland Walk features mixed deciduous woodland, while our numerous ponds provide essential support for freshwater ecosystems. Our Conservation Ranger is actively updating our area management plans to ensure the best habitat conservation practices and create various forms of nature engagement activities for garden visitors.

Currently, our Conservation Ranger is conducting surveys of our freshwater habitats to enhance our understanding of biodiversity within the gardens. We are also inviting volunteers to join us in carrying out these surveys. Our garden has also hosted different Citizen Science events, such as the City Nature Challenge Bioblitz with the Birmingham and Black Country Wildlife Trust, which resulted in Birmingham and Black Country having the highest observation numbers in 2024 in the United Kingdom.

We are piloting various Nature Engagement sessions for families with our Conservation Ranger, where visitors can learn about solitary bees and build bee hotels, participate in bug hunts to understand the local insect groups, or take part in pond dipping to observe the various living species living under the water’s surface.

To support nature connection, we hold Social Prescribing tours to help groups learn more about natural areas in the garden and have a moment to connect with nature. Our Conservation Ranger is currently developing an Eco Garden to showcase environmental conservation and provide an area especially for our nature engagement sessions.
