See the fabulous Magnolias in all their glory, as the ones at the Gardens have just started blooming.

In China, Magnolias have long been a symbol of femininity, beauty and gentleness. This can easily be seen in the flower itself, whose large unique petals ooze grace and beauty. Looking at them it isn’t hard to believe that in America, they have often been associated with purity and nobility. All of these traits can easily be linked to mothers and motherhood.

In the Gardens, the Magnolia trees can be seen in and around the Hugh Nettlefold Alpine Garden.

Cherry blossoms in Japanese culture symbolise both life and death. In the bloom, as they are now, they represent the coming of new life.

According to Language of Flowers, published in 1884 by the Kate Greenaway, in Victorian flower language cherry trees symbolised education, such as the teaching a parent would give to a child.

Keep your eyes up high to see the freshly blooming Cherry Blossom as you walk through the Gardens.

In some Asian countries like China and Japan Camellias are all about love and life long devotion. This is because all of the flower falls from the plant in one rather than individual petals falling off.

In the United Kingdom in the Victorian era, the flower became a symbol of luxury, with the Language of Flowers stating it represents “Unpretending Excellence” and “Perfected Loveliness”. What better time then for us to all spoil our mothers, they surely deserves it.

A wide variety of Camellias can be found across the Gardens including in our Subtropical House.
