Birmingham City University – BA (Hons) Fashion Design Exhibition: ‘Fashion In Nature’

Fashion ‘In Nature presents excerpts from first year students’ submissions on the BA (Hons) Fashion Design programme at Birmingham City University. Drawn from two modules taught in 2024, this exhibition challenges traditional, wasteful linear design processes that still prevail in common industry systems. Based on the closed loop principle of designing out waste through creative design approaches such as upcycling and zero waste pattern cutting methods, students have explored how the role of design and thus their future practice can be redefined when putting planet and people first.

Complemented by in depth investigations of fashion and its colonial past and present, students have investigated their own positionality within the design process aiming to shift the current fashion paradigm. Proposing how to decolonise the fashion system through developing a greater awareness and responsibility in their decision making as well as applying an inclusive approach to embedding social justice, they have developed personal manifestoes as a reflective guideline for their degree and the years to come.

As proud members of the British Fashion Council we would like to say thank you for the donations provided through their Industry Fabric Initiative. Additionally, in further support of utilising dead-stock & production waste, thank you for the donations from the Midlands based denim manufacturer Lovall.

This exhibition seeks to inspire and create awareness for the urgent changes needed to achieve a paradigm shift in how clothes are designed, made, worn and discarded.
