Learn how to make inks from kitchen waste, wild plants and other natural materials. Using plants gathered from the gardens you will learn how to extract colour and use modifiers, binders and preservatives.
Modifiers extend the range of colours from inks and we will use them to make a swatch. We will look at examples of my ink works for inspiration and there will be time for your own experiments. By the end of the workshop you will have a bottle of ink, colour swatch, experimental drawings and an instruction manual to take away with you.
Natural inks are absorbing and can be addictive as you explore the world through natural colour. No experience needed, just curiosity and enthusiasm.
About Your Tutor
Carolyn’s practice is rooted in restorative making to reignite our relationship with the natural world. Her semi-wild allotment is her studio and materials source to make botanical inks and pigments from abundant wild plants. She is researching wild plant histories, medicine and folklore and has a daily practice of drawing and writing about small changes at her allotment.
Much of her work is with people who don’t think of themselves as artists, encouraging and supporting them try something new or long forgotten, to grow their confidence and have fun.

Is there an age limit?
The workshop is for ages 18 and over.
