MUSIC IN THE GARDENS

2010 PROGRAMME

Bands play in the Bandstand every Sunday and Bank Holiday Monday
from April to October at approx. 2pm.

4 April BB Swing. Midlands based jazz swing band fronted by star violinist Ben Holder featuring clarinet, guitar and double bass.
5 April Melbourne Town Band. A genuine old fashioned town band from the sleepy town of Melbourne in Derbyshire.
11 April Garry Allcock Quintet. Top drawer mainstream to bebop aggregation featuring top jazz players.
18 April City of Birmingham Brass Band. A brass band with a long and glorious history and formidable reputation.  They broadcast on BBC, appeared in theatrical productions and perform throughout the region.
25 April Tipitina. The New Orleans jazz, swing and blues of Dr. John, Professor Longhair and Tom Waits from hot young Preston based combo.
2 May Arrow Valley Brass. Formed in 1977 and originally known as Alcester Victoria Youth Band, the band has continued to develop over the years and is now a regular at the National Brass Band Finals including picking up a creditable place.
3 May The Kremlin Brothers. Acoustic guitar and vocal based outfit who specialise in delivering unusual versions of songs such as those by Britney, Bowie, The Beatles, Monkees and Coldplay.
9 May Highley Colliery Band. Highley Colliery Band are a brass band based in the ex-mining village of Highley, Shropshire. The band have been regulars at the Botanical Gardens over the past years and also perform concerts & venues across the country.
16 May Digby Fairweather. The UK's leading jazz personality - broadcaster, bandleader, author, but most of all, a very hot trumpet player.
23 May The Antique Six. One of the best established classic British Trad bands of today.
30 May The Dirty Robbers. Blues, Rock 'n' Roll and jive from charismatic and entertaining Birmingham combo.
31 May Burton Concert Band. Following on from the long tradition of brass and woodwind bands from that region, the Burton Concert Band have been very successful in national band competitions including a Gold Medal at the Boosey and Hawkes band finals.
6 June Becky Brine. The self styled Karaoke Queen from Devon, who can be seen street singing throughout the summer, sings.
13 June Swing Museum. Spirited violin and guitar led quartet loosely drawing on the repertoire of Django Reinhardt with a personal and interesting take on the jazz standards.
20 June Kel Elliott. Extremely entertaining mix of jazz, skiffle, blues, western swing and Irish folk by Warwick based four piece fronted by singer and double bass player.
27 June The Night Trippers. A fascinating mix of the lesser-known music of New Orleans following in the footsteps of Doctor John playing a hot gumbo of Crescent City Mardi Gras, Swamp, Cajun and Voodoo.
4 July Blackwell Concert Band. Flexible, entertaining 25 piece made up of brass and woodwind specialising in marches, jazz, calypso, blues, pop, rock and film scores.
11 July Roy Potts Five & A Penny. Long established New Orleans style band based in Wales and a fixture in the Biritsh traditional jazz scene where they still play some 200 gigs every year.

1 August Mike Burney Quartet. The most accomplished and respected jazz musician ever to come from this region.  Mike has performed with Kenny Baker, Harry 'Sweets' Edison, Anita O'Day, Gerry Mulligan, Mel Torme, Bob Hope - even Morecambe and Wise.  A national treasure.
8 August Birmingham Concert Band. Formed in 1961, probably the oldest band in the region and under the baton of wind instrumentalist Eric Entwistle, the BCB have 1000 items in their library, probably the biggest repertoire of any concert band in the UK.
15 August The Apex Jazz and Swing. Well established and entertaining hot traditional jazz aggregation with a reputation throughout the Midlands and North Wales.
22 August C-Jam.
29 August Out of the Blue Big Band. Locally based big band performing the classic swing music from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington Era.  Previously known as the Blue Max Big Band.
30 August The Old Comrades Jazz Band. New Orleans style jazz band, Birmingham based who specialise in selecting unusual repertoire.
5 September Rotary Club Country Music Festival. Performers to be advised for this very popular event.
12 September City of Lichfield Concert Band. A nationally respected wind band of woodwind and brass instruments with a repertoire that includes music from films and shows, jazz, pop, military music and light classical transcriptions.
19 September AD Concert Band. Solihull based 60 piece community wind band with a large and varied repertoire from the classics to West End shows via film themes and dance band music.
26 September New Washboard Syncopators. Traditional jazz band in the style of Louis Armstrong and Joe Oliver who incuded popular songs from the 20's and 30's.
